about

"Summertime Peculiar" was written and produced in a style I developed during my work in theater, when I co-composed "Little Rock" for Seattle Children's Theater in the mid-90's. "Little Rock" went on to have successful runs in Pittsburgh (PA), Minneapolis (MN), Little Rock (AR), Washington (DC) and other markets, after an outstanding run in Seattle, where it garnered Best Children's Theater Event of the Year from The Seattle Times in 1995.

As for "Summertime Peculiar," every song is intended to be the centerpiece of a scene in a musical or a film. Does that mean that this is a concept album? Not intentionally, but it is my intention for these songs to portray characters in scenes or chapters if it was a novel. How closely these characters align with me or close associates of mine, I'll never tell. I will admit that a number of the tunes were probably influenced by my experiences in writing my first book, a biography of "Sonny Boy Williamson" (Alex Miller).

Miller was a uniquely influential force in American Music whose life story forms a series of amazingly succinct chapters and fabulous interaction with a long list of notable and distinct characters. There is definitely an overt jazz and rhythm and blues influence, which are both new territories in my musical trick bag. These influences were especially fleshed out by the presence of drummer Ben Smith, his wife Libby Torrance.

Ben's best known as the only drummer to play with both Nancy Wilsons. Another major supporter in this effort was Mikel Rollins, who also has been a consistent member of the Jim Basnight Band on various instruments since 1996, while opening my eyes to a lot of musical knowledge and happy times. Trumpeter Jim Knodle was also a major influence and mentor for this effort.

Vocalist Suze Sims also gave the album a much wider range of musicianship and drama with her unique vocal stylings. Geoffrey Castle and Clayton Park provided a nice variety of string accompaniment adding far ranging styles. There are many others who gave the album versatility and quality musicianship and personality, such as Brad Dolsen, Joe Meyering, Steve Pearson, Mike Rain, Matt Chamberlain, Richard Gray (who co-composed "Little Rock" with me), Gary Lanz and of course co-producer and bassist Garey Shelton.

Overall, this is an album I'm especially proud of in its unique qualities and unique intentions. So, ready or not, sit back and enjoy the show.
